The PEA Executive Board has chosen our 2009 Teacher of the Year. From a big group of highly qualified nominees, this year’s recipient is Karen Stevens from Northwood Elementary. Karen has demonstrated a willingness to serve others through her work as a teacher, parent, community member and association representative. If you get a chance, tell her congratulations! Karen will be recognized at the annual Kalamazoo County Education Association Partner’s in Education dinner on April 23rd. See your building rep for ticket information.
Others nominated by their peers for this honor include the following:
Nicole Berish, Chris Gaudard, Jodi Heaney and Beth Jonker from the middle school; and Nancy Looper and Shani Wertman from the high school. Let these outstanding teachers and association members know you’re proud of them too!
SNOW DAYS – 2 DOWN, ? TO GO!
As you may remember, the issue of snow days has been a hot topic within our association. When the district closed due to water problems last year, the administration asked us to report to work (mostly in buildings that had unsafe water and no bathroom facilities). The PEA strongly protested that action and demanded that snow day contract language be a part of summer contract negotiations. Despite a trend by the administration to want to avoid calling students in for make-up days in June, their bargaining team refused to alter the language in the contract (except at the expense of other contract language).
Therefore, should we have any more school closings this year, the District will HAVE to schedule additional student days in June. We will NOT agree to any type of “letter of understanding” or deviation from contract language, since it has become clear that they completely support the current language that requires June make-up days.
